How to get SDMS Administrator and Empower clients to coexist on a machine - WKB56833

Article number: 56833

OBJECTIVE or GOAL

Configure SDMS Admin and Empower 3 clients to coexist and function correctly when installed on the same machine.

ENVIRONMENT

  • NuGenesis 9 SDMS Administrator
  • NuGenesis 8 SDMS Administrator
  • Empower 3

PROCEDURE

  1. Install the Empower client first. SDMS Administrator will use the Oracle client in Empower to connect to the NuGenesis database.
  2. Configure the TNS_ADMIN variable in the system to point to the E3 Oracle client:
    • Example: G:\Empower\Oracle\Oracle12cClient\network\admin
  3. Edit the tnsnames.ora file in the above path to include an entry for the SDMS database.
    • If the user will use NuGenesis LMS and the Stability module, add an entry to tnsnames.ora for the SLIM database.
  4. Run the 32-bit ODBC Administration tool (Control Panel > Administrative Tools), click the System DSNs tab, and ensure that each DSN for NuGenesis is present:
    • NuGenesis 8:
      • _NG_PROJ80_ORACLEINFO_
      • _NG_PROJLIST_MASTER80_
    • NuGenesis 9:
      • _NG_PROJ_ORACLEINFO_
      • _NG_PROJLIST_MASTER_
  5. If the user will also use LMS and the Stability module, add a system DSN for the SLIM database instance.
    • If you select the name from the drop-down list, there may be an extra space appended to the service name; if so, delete this space before saving the DSN.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The Empower client typically does not use the ".WORLD" suffix for its alias names in tnsnames.ora, whereas SDMS typically does use the suffix. The two clients also differ in their use of the "names.default_domain" parameter in their sqlnet.ora files: Empower omits it, while SDMS uses it. For this reason, it is often beneficial to have two entries for the SDMS database in the Empower tnsnames.ora file, one with the .WORLD suffix and one without, so that the system can resolve the alias properly in all cases.

If the TNS_ADMIN/sqlnet.ora/tnsnames.ora parameters are not configured correctly, the following messages may appear when starting or logging in to the clients:

id56833, EMP2LIC, EMP2OPT, EMP2SW, EMP3GC, EMP3LIC, EMP3OPT, EMP3SW, EMPGC, EMPGPC, EMPLIC, EMPOWER2, EMPOWER3, EMPSW, SDMS, SDMS8, SDMS8NU, SUP, SUPISDMS, SUPNG
