SYMPTOMS

  • Peaks are splitting randomly down to baseline
  • Flat regions in full scan spectra
  • Spray becomes more stable as the flow rate increases
  • Leak at sample syringe connection to selector valve
  • System pressure increases significantly (e.g., 1000 psi) when LC flow is switched from Waste to LC

CAUSE

Unstable spray from ESI probe due to partially blocked capillary or incorrectly built probe

FIX or WORKAROUND

Rebuild the probe, including the PEEK union and capillary, or replace the capillary if tool-free ESI probe
