Is the Microsoft Edge browser supported for use with NuGenesis? - WKB6999

Article number: 6999

ENVIRONMENT

  • NuGenesis 9 SDMS
  • NuGenesis 9 LMS
  • NuGenesis 8 SDMS
  • NuGenesis 8 LMS
  • Chromium-based Microsoft Edge
  • Legacy Microsoft Edge

ANSWER

None of the NuGenesis 8 web applications is supported with the Edge browser, including WebVision, the SDMS HelpDesk, Audit Trail Viewer, and LMS SampleShare. SDMS WebVision does not work in the Edge browser's native mode; other applications have varying levels of functionality in the Edge browser.

For NuGenesis 8 and 9, the SDMS WebVision site is supported in Microsoft Edge's Internet Explorer mode.  This mode requires Internet Explorer 11 to be installed.  If IE 11 is uninstalled then IE mode in Edge will not be available.

In NuGenesis 9, the LMS SampleShare app is supported with the Edge browser.

In NuGenesis 9.1, the new SDMS Audit Trail web app is supported for use with Chromium-based Edge.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

As of Q4 2022, Microsoft's plans for the retirement of Internet Explorer involve disabling/removing the desktop app (iexplore.exe) but supporting IE Mode in Microsoft Edge for years to come.

CRI-664 has been filed in order to enhance WebVision's compatibility with modern browsers.

The legacy Edge browser (based on a modified version of the old Trident engine from IE) does not have any support for legacy Internet Explorer functions.  It does not have any Compatibility Mode.  WebVision has for years relied on Compatibility Mode in order to function in IE 8 through 11; as a consequence, WebVision does not work in the Edge browser.

The Chromium-based Edge browser does have a legacy mode, called IE Integration mode, which supports old web apps in a compatibility layer.  See article 191566 for a procedure to enable IE Mode in Chromium-based Edge.
