How to enable "Open sites in Internet Explorer mode" in Microsoft Edge - WKB191566

Article number: 191566

OBJECTIVE or GOAL

Load legacy web apps in NuGenesis (SDMS WebVision and the SDMS Audit Trail) in Microsoft Edge's IE Mode.

ENVIRONMENT

  • Windows 10
  • Chromium-based Microsoft Edge
    • Internet Explorer 11 MUST BE INSTALLED for Edge's Internet Explorer mode to be available
  • NuGenesis 8 SR2
  • NuGenesis LMS 9.x

PROCEDURE

  1. How to enable IE Mode in Chromium-based Microsoft Edge:
    1. Via browser setting in Edge:
      • Also accessible by entering the following URL in the address bar: edge://settings/defaultBrowser
      • On the Settings\Default Browser page, click the button to enable Internet Explorer integration mode.
      • This setting may not be visible if Edge is controlled by a domain policy.
    2. Via group policy:
      • Enable "Open sites in Internet Explorer mode" on the More Tools menu:
        • Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Microsoft Edge/Allow Internet Explorer mode testing: Enabled
        • User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Microsoft Edge/Allow Internet Explorer mode testing: Enabled
      • Enable IE Mode in Edge:
        • Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Microsoft Edge/Configure Internet Explorer integration: IEMode
        • User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Microsoft Edge/Configure Internet Explorer integration: IEMode
      • Enable the Enterprise Mode Site List:
        • Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Microsoft Edge/Configure the Enterprise Mode Site List: <path to XML file>
        • User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Microsoft Edge/Configure the Enterprise Mode Site List: <path to XML file>
      • The policies are visible in Group Policy editors only if the Microsoft Edge policy templates are installed. Go to Microsoft's Edge landing page to download the Edge policy templates.
      • Follow the instructions in Microsoft's knowledge base to install the policy templates.
    3. Via registry keys:
      • 64-bit registry:
        • System default policy: HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Edge
        • User policy: HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Edge
      • 32-bit registry:
        • System default policy: HKLM\Software\WOW6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\Edge
        • User policy: HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Edge
      • Registry keys:
        • Name: InternetExplorerIntegrationLevel
          • Type: DWORD
          • Value: 1
          • Equivalent to the "Allow Internet Explorer mode testing" policy
        • Name: InternetExplorerIntegrationSiteList
        • Name: InternetExplorerIntegrationTestingAllowed
          • Type: DWORD
          • Value: 1
          • Equivalent to the "Configure Internet Explorer integration" policy
        • Additional site-list.xml registry keys:
        • 64-bit registry:
          • HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\EnterpriseMode
          • HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\MicosoftEdge\Main\EnterpriseMode
        • 32-bit registry:
          • HKLM\Software\WOW6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\EnterpriseMode
          • HKLM\Software\WOW6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\MicrosoftEdge\Main\EnterpriseMode
        • Name: SiteList
  2. Configure NuGenesis WebVision and Audit Trail to load automatically in IE mode:
    1. The WebVision URL must be entered in the Enterprise Mode site list. Because the URL necessarily includes the SDMS web server's name, Waters cannot provide an off-the-shelf site list entry for WebVision.
    2. Refer to the Microsoft Edge IE Mode Policies documentation for information on creating, or adding to, a site list XML file.
    3. The entry for WebVision (legacy WebVision as of 9.3) must have the <compat-mode> tag set to IE8Enterprise and the <open-in> tag set to IE11.
    4. The new WebVision App (version 9.3+) must have the <compat-mode> tag set to IE11 and the <open-in> tag set to IE11.
    5. The entry for the Audit Trail (legacy Audit Trail as of 9.3) must have the <compat-mode> tag set to IE8Enterprise and the <open-in> tag set to IE11.
    6. Make the site-list XML file available via an internal HTTPS server, a network UNC path, or a local path on each client.
    7. In the "Configure the Enterprise Mode Site List" policy, set the path to an HTTPS path, a UNC path, or a local path for the XML file.
  3. Restart Microsoft Edge after making any changes.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The information in this article is accurate as of Microsoft Edge version 90 (stable release). The instructions may become obsolete at any time due to changes in Microsoft Edge.

The following internal pages in Edge are useful for debugging IE Mode:

  • edge://compat/ (redirects to edge://compat/enterprise): shows the contents of the enterprise mode site list for Edge (note: this list is distinct from the enterprise mode site list for IE).  Has links to other pages under /compat/
  • edge://compat/iediagnostic : displays detailed information about the config settings for IE Mode
  • edge://policy : shows the enabled policy settings for the browser
