How to Create a Peak Custom Field - Tip85

Article number: 69074

OBJECTIVE or GOAL

Welcome back to Get Empowered! In the last Empower tip-of-the-week post for Empower CDS Software, we learned how to create a Component Custom Field. (Tip #84)

Creating Custom Fields in Empower:

  • #82: The basic steps on creating a Custom Field
  • #83: How to create a Custom Sample Set Field
  • #84: How to create a Component Custom Field

This week, we will learn how to create a Peak Custom Field (Part 4).

In the last tip, we created a Component Custom Field for Label Claim. Our goal in this tip is to calculate the percent of Label Claim for an ingredient in the final product. The calculation is a simple one: take the calculated amount of the ingredient, divided by the label claim, times 100. This can be done by creating a Peak Custom Field. A Peak Custom Field is a user defined calculation pertaining to a peak or peaks within the chromatogram.

Let’s get started.

ENVIRONMENT

  • Empower

PROCEDURE

  1. Launch the new Custom Field wizard and view the Data and Type Selection screen. Select Peak as the field type and Real as the data type.

  1. On the Source Selection screen, the data source defaults to Calculated. (Note: Whenever you select either Peak or Result as Field Type, Empower understands that you want to make a calculation.).

  1. The Formula Entry screen is divided into three areas:

  • Field=: an open text box to enter the calculation
  • Fields: displays a list of fields you can select from for the calculation
  • Operations: displays the various mathematical operators you can select from
  1. Scroll to the right in the Fields section and locate Amount. Double click on Amount to add it to the Field area. The division symbol is the / (forward slash). Double-click on the / to add it to the Field area.

  1. Scroll to the right in the Fields section, locate Label_Claim. Double click on Label_Claim to add it to the Field area. The multiplication symbol is * (asterisk). Double click the * from the Operations section to add that to the Field area and then enter 100.

  1. Once we process the data, we see the result for one of the samples. The new Peak Field will automatically appear in the peaks table in review.

  1. In this sample, the result for the calculation is red because it is outside of a range set in the Limits tab of the Processing Method. Please refer to Tip #27: Using System Suitability to Flag Failing Results to learn how to set up the Processing Method to flag failing results.

It’s that easy!

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • You can type out the formula rather than double clicking on the fields and operators, however, the field names must match exactly to how they appear in the list. They are case sensitive. Therefore, it is safer to simply double click from the list provided.
  • This procedure can be followed using the QuickStart or Pro interface.
