Stop Flow Activated after DP upgrade on Mass Spectrometer with ACQUITY - WKB10136

Article number: 10136

SYMPTOMS

  • Start the flow on the ACQUITY and the stop flow activation error message pops up.
  • Gas pressures are good.
  • The DP was just updated to DP 2016 SR1 or later (DP4 SR1 or ICS 1.65)
  • UNIFI was just upgraded to 1.9.4

ENVIRONMENT

  • ICOP 1.65 or Driver Pack 4 Service Release 1 (DP4 SR1)
  • UNIFI 1.9.4
  • ACQUITY UPLC
  • ACQUITY UPLC I-Class
  • ACQUITY UPLC H-Class

CAUSE

Once the ICOP or Driver Pack is upgraded to DP4 SR1 (1.65), the Gas Fail cables on the mass spectrometer need to be plumbed up to pins 3 and 4 on switch 2, not pins 3 and 5. (Upgrading UNIFI to 1.9.4 can also cause this error to occur)

FIX or WORKAROUND

  1. On Connection 2 of the Mass Spectrometer, move pin 5 wire to pin 4.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Waters mass spectrometers provide two types of stop flow signaling. "Normal closed" ("N/C") stop flow signaling, where the contact closure circuit is completed (closed) when the API gas flow is normal on the mass spectrometer, and "Normal open" ("N/O") stop flow signaling, where the contact closure circuit is open when the API gas flow is normal on the mass spectrometer.

On firmware 1.65 and greater, the ACQUITY UPLC solvent manager expects a "normal closed" ("N/C") contact closure signal. This corresponds to pins 3 and 4 on connector 2 of Waters mass spectrometers. Stop flow signaling on third party instruments connected to ACQUITY UPLC solvent managers may also need to be modified to account for this change in behavior.

Connecting an ACQUITY UPLC solvent manager running firmware 1.65 and greater to pins 3 and 5 of a Waters mass spectrometer supplies the inverse signal to the solvent manager, causing the persistent stop flow signaling when the gas flow to the mass spectrometer is normal.
