ANSWER

The pump assemblies, especially the check valves, require a certain level of back pressure to operate efficiently over their life cycle.

Generally, the back pressure is expected to be above 1000 psi.

If the back pressure is lower on a UPLC system, revise the LC method and the various components of the system as noted in the "Additional Information" section.

The UPLC system back pressure depends on multiple factors, such as mobile phase composition, solvent viscosity, system flow rate, column characteristics (temperature, dimensions, chemistry, packaging, and particle size), tubing internal diameter, and the LC flow path length.

The back pressure measurement is usually not used as a specification criterion on its own. However, it can be meaningful for troubleshooting and tracking changes among the aforementioned LC components if a system back pressure changes.
