Do I need to modify an ACQUITY UPLC system with PDA/ELS to use normal-phase solvents? - WKB27181
ENVIRONMENT
- ACQUITY UPLC Binary Solvent Manager (BSM)
- ACQUITY UPLC Sample Manager (SM)
- ACQUITY PDA Detector
- ACQUITY ELS Detector
- Normal-phase solvents
ANSWER
Yes, modifications are required. You should install the optional THF/Hexane Kit:
- Part 205000971 for passive CV BSM
- Part 205000972 for i2V CV BSM
Solvents supported with this kit are:
- THF
- Hexane
- Ethyl acetate
- Acetone
Solvents NOT supported:
- Methylene chloride
- Chloroform
- Toluene
- Chlorinated solvents including trichlorobenzene
- Strong acids (>5%)
System compatibility information:
Mobile phase lines (A1, A2, B1, B2): 100% hexane/THF compatible
Plunger seal wash: 25% hexane/THF compatible
Needle wash: 100% hexane/THF compatible
Strong wash: 100% hexane/THF compatible
Weak wash: 100% hexane/THF compatible
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Replacing the BOS pump tubing can be very difficult on certain models; for the models/SNs listed below, it is recommended that the upgrade be performed at a Waters repair center:
- ACQUITY UPLC (UPS model) sample managers with serial numbers between J05UPS131M and C07UPS695M
- ACQUITY UPLC (UPA model) sample managers with serial numbers between J05UPS051M and C07UPA335M
All serial numbers after this already have the compatible needle wash tubing installed.
If a system is not fitted with the kit, up to 10% THF can be run through the system.
