Yes, ACQUITY UPLC systems can be controlled manually outside of either Empower or MassLynx.

The ACQUITY Console is a virtual front panel for the ACQUITY UPLC systems. Manual control of the UPLC systems can be done from here, just as you would from the front panel display on systems such as the Waters Alliance series. If you are unable to launch the controlling software (MassLynx or Empower), the ACQUITY Console can often be opened either from a desktop icon or from its executable file, ACQUITYConsole.exe, found in the following folders.  

MassLynx Workstation: C:\Program Files(x86) \ Waters Instruments \ Bin

Empower computer: C:\Empower \ Instruments \ Bin

In addition, there is the Stand-alone ACQUITY Console. The stand-alone console allows for both manual control and the running of methods. A shortcut to the Stand-alone ACQUITY Console is found at these file locations:

MassLynx Workstation: C:\Program Files(x86) \ Waters Instruments \ Bin

Empower computer: C:\Empower \ Instruments \ Bin

There is also a handheld controller available for the ACQUITY UPLC system that can be used to manually operate the systems. This is a hardware option but is not commonly purchased. 

If there is no working workstation or computer connected to the ACQUITY UPLC system and no handheld controller available, there is no way to control the system manually.
