With ACQUITY UPLC, high ripple of system pressure and retention time shifts in chromatogram - WKB203844

Article number: 203844

SYMPTOMS

  • High ripple of system pressure

  • Retention time shifts observed in chromatography

  • No movement of mobile phase when purging line

ENVIRONMENT

  • Alliance HPLC System
  • 2695 Separations Module
  • 2795 Separations Module
  • ACQUITY UPLC BSM
  • ACQUITY UPLC H-Class
  • ACQUITY UPLC H-Class Quaternary Solvent Manager (QSM)
  • ACQUITY UPLC I-Class

CAUSE

Except for the solvent line entering the bottle cap, the solvent bottle is closed air-tight (no solvent vapor filter installed and all holes on the bottle cap are closed).

Solvent draw produces a vacuum inside the bottle, preventing the pump from continuously drawing the solvent.

FIX or WORKAROUND

Ensure that there is pressure equilibration between the inside of the bottle and the environment, for example by installing a solvent vapor filter or by removing pin plugs on the holes of the bottle cap.
