How to connect a Mettler Toledo SevenExcellence pH meter to Waters SDS - WKB48889

Article number: 48889

OBJECTIVE or GOAL

Connect a SevenExcellence pH meter from Mettler Toledo to a Tibbo box and Waters Serial Device Software so that it can be used in NuGenesis Smart Builder forms.

ENVIRONMENT

  • NuGenesis 9 LMS
  • NuGenesis 8 LMS
  • NuGenesis 8 ELN
  • Waters Serial Device Support 2.0
  • One or more SevenExcellence pH meters

PROCEDURE

  1. The meter's manual states that it has an RS232 serial port for connection to a line printer. This port can be used to connect the meter to a Tibbo box; however, because the meter does not support receiving commands via the serial port, the connection is one-way, from the meter to SDS to Smart Builder.
  2. In the meter's setup interface, set the Printer Type to RS232 Compact Printer or RS232 Line Printer.
    • Note: There is a difference in the print format between the two options. The available options also depend on the installed firmware version in the meter.  The Escape Sequence Receive and Regex strings below assume that the output format is similar to that for a paper printer.
  3. Use a standard serial cable to connect the serial port on the meter to the serial port of a Tibbo Device Server box.
  4. Connect the power and Ethernet cables to the Tibbo box.
  5. Start the Tibbo DS Manager software.
  6. Select the Tibbo box from the list and click the Settings button.
  7. Configure the box's serial port settings as follows (default values for SevenExcellence meters as per the manual):
    • Serial interface: full duplex
    • RTS/CTS flow control: Disabled OR Remote
    • DTR mode: Idle or remote
    • Baudrate: 9600bps
    • Parity: Even
    • Data bits: 8 bits
  8. Configure the TCP/IP settings on the General tab for either DHCP or a static IP address if one is available.
  9. Click OK to save the settings to the Tibbo box.
  10. In the meter's control panel, from the Home screen, click Setup > Hardware > Peripherals > Printer.  Set the printer type to "RS232 Line Printer".
  11. Start the SDS Configurator.
  12. Create a new configuration or edit an existing SDS configuration for the pH meter:
  • Measure command: R
  • Escape Sequence (Send): <CR><LF>TON
  • Use Active Mode: No
  • Escape Sequence (Receive): <CR><LF>                       <CR><LF>                       <CR><LF>                       <CR><LF>
  • Note: There are 24 blank spaces between each CRLF pair.
  • Parsing expression for the pH measurement: (\d\.\d+) pH
  • Unit expression: none

13. Save the configuration
