Users are prompted to open or save NGX files when opening records in NuGenesis SDMS WebVision - WKB47700

Article number: 47700

SYMPTOMS

  • Internet Explorer prompts the user to open or save an NGX file when clicking on a record in legacy WebVision:
    • "Do you want to open or save Filename.ngx?"
  • Microsoft Edge downloads an NGX file to disk, or prompts the user to Open or Save the NGX file, when clicking on a recrord in new WebVision
  • After clicking Open, the file incorrectly attempts to open in Adobe Acrobat:
    • "Acrobat could not open 'Filename.ngx' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)."

ENVIRONMENT

  • NuGenesis 9 SDMS
  • NuGenesis 8 SDMS
  • Internet Explorer 11
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Google Chrome

CAUSE

Legacy WebVision: the Internet Explorer security settings are set too high for the WebVision site's security zone, and Adobe Acrobat is incorrectly registered as the application for the .NGX file type.

New WebVision: the browser is not configured to auto-open NGX files

FIX or WORKAROUND

  • Legacy WebVision in Internet Explorer:
    1. Open Internet Explorer
    2. Click the Tools menu > Internet Options
    3. Click the Security tab
    4. Click Trusted sites
    5. Set the security level on the Trusted Sites zone to Medium-low
  • New WebVision in Microsoft Edge:
    1. Download the Administrative Templates for Microsoft Edge: Configure Microsoft Edge for Windows with policy settings | Microsoft Learn
    2. Import the ADMX file into the domain's policy editor
    3. Enable the following policy: Administrative Templates \ Microsoft Edge \ "List of file types that should be automatically opened on download"
    4. Show the list associated with this policy
    5. Add the "ngx" file type to the list
    6. Apply this policy to all client machines in the domain
  • New WebVision in Google Chrome:
    • Log in to new WebVision and preview a report or restore a file
    • Click the Downloads menu in the Chrome toolbar
    • Right-click the NGX file and click "Always open files of this type"
  • Register the NGX file type with the NuGenesis Transfer App:
    • For NG8: NuGenesis 8.0 > Register SDMS MIME Type
    • For NG9: NuGenesis LMS SDMS > Register SDMS MIME Type
