Persistent ORA-01254 errors seen in Oracle TNS Listener logs, and "Heavy swapping observed on system" seen in Oracle Alert log for Empower and NuGenesis systems - WKB287276

Article number: 287276

SYMPTOMS

  • The following message appears in NuGenesis SDMS client or in Empower applications on each login (until an Oracle DB restart):
    • NG14529 ODBC Driver reports error: ORA-01254: TNS: Listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
  • The same ORA-01254 error code and message are seen in the TNS Listener log
  • The following message is seen in the Oracle Alert log shortly before the TNS errors are logged:
    • WARNING: Heavy swapping observed on system in last 5 mins.
Heavy swapping can lead to timeouts, poor performance, and instance eviction.

ENVIRONMENT

  • NuGenesis 9
  • Empower 3 FR5 and above
  • Oracle 19c, 12c

CAUSE

Insufficient memory on the database host led to excessive memory swapping to the page file, which led to TNS timeouts and the database instance becoming unresponsive.

FIX or WORKAROUND

  1. Increase the amount of memory in the database host.
  2. Increase the Oracle SGA allocation.
  3. Restart the database host.
