When using Ignore Archive Bit and a short Archive Protocol (less than 1 hour), why can files be archived multiple times? - WKB263406

Article number: 263406

ENVIRONMENT

  • NuGenesis SDMS (all versions)

ANSWER

When you use Ignore Archive Bit, the SDMS Archive Agent captures the last Modified Date and Time of EVERY file in the share, using encrypted files on the archive agent server. It's a massive admin overhead for the Archive Agent. Not only must it check EVERY file in the share, on EVERY scan, it also must compare the Modified date/time of every file in the share, on every scan, with those captured on the last scan and record those encrypted files (on the File Capture Server).

Instead of Reset Archive Bit, where the AA looks at the share, separates all those files with the Archive attribute ON vs OFF, and then considers only those files with the Attribute ON and whether the last modified date/times of those files meet the archive protocol set in the FC Template for those files.

If you continue to use the Ignore Archive Bit instead of the Reset Archive Bit, you must increase your Archive protocol to a value greater than any time changes due to clock changes—for example, 2 hours, because clocks change one hour at a time.

When SDMS Archive Agent looks only at the Date/Time of Modification of the files and does not consider whether the archive bit is on or off, there is nothing that can be done about this.
