"Error: The volume <name> containing the file" occurs when restoring files from NuGenesis OSM devices - WKB21005

Article number: 21005

SYMPTOMS

  • The following error message appears in the NuGenesis Restore application when restoring files:
    • "Error: The volume <name> containing the file"
  • The selected files are not downloaded from NuGenesis
  • The Restore log file (in Drive:\Program Files (x86)\NuGenesis 8.0\UV) contains the complete message:
    • "Additional Info: The volume <name> containing the file <filepath_and_name> on device <path> is not available. [NG14865] Volume information in database does not match that of the device."
  • The selected files were moved to an secondary storage location by the NuGenesis OSM module

ENVIRONMENT

  • NuGenesis 8 SDMS SR1

CAUSE

The OSM device's location was moved to a new physical device or drive, such that the files are available from the same UNC path but the drive has a different label than that in the NuGenesis OSM device configuration.

FIX or WORKAROUND

Install a hotfix for NuGenesis 8 SDMS SR1 that disables all checks on the OSM volume labels. Contact Waters Technical Support to obtain a copy of this fix.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Volume labels in OSM were useful primarily for "jukebox" style arrays of writeable CDs or DVDs. The volume label was one means that the system had to distinguish between individual discs within the array. The volume labels were implemented in other types of OSM devices, such as single hard drives or RAID arrays, where there was only one physical or logically addressable volume. The hotfix removes volume labels completely from the OSM module, except for those volumes that were created prior to the hotfix. New OSM devices will have volumes with labels "N/A Label not needed" for the volume label. The NuGenesis Restore app will not check the volume label when restoring files from OSM volumes.

The fix was incorporated into NuGenesis 8 Feature Release 1 and later releases.
