Error message when starting NuGenesis SDMS client software: "[NG15504] An error occurred while reading the Local Project List" - WKB19067

Article number: 19067

SYMPTOMS

  • The following error message appears when logging in to, or starting, NuGenesis SDMS client applications, or when the SDMS App Timeout interval is reached:
    • [NG15504] An error occurred while reading the Local Project List.

ENVIRONMENT

  • NuGenesis 9 SDMS
  • NuGenesis 8 SDMS
  • SDMS client software installed on client PCs or on Citrix servers

CAUSE

The INI file in use by the application has an invalid or blank path for the NuGenesis installation directory.

FIX or WORKAROUND

  1. For NuGenesis SDMS 8 and SDMS 9.0, open (with administrative rights) the following file in Notepad: C:\Windows\win.ini
  2. For NuGenesis SDMS 9.1 and 9.3, open (with administrative rights) the following file in Notepad: C:\ProgramData\NuGenesis\NGSDMS.ini
  3. Look for the following text:
    • NuGenesis 8:
      • [NuGenesis Info 8.0]
        LongInstallDir=C:\Program Files (x86)\NuGenesis 8.0
        InstallDir=C:\PROGRA~2\NUGENE~1.0
        LongNgCommFilesDir=C:\Program Files (x86)\NuGenesis 8.0\Common Files
        NgCommFilesDir=C:\PROGRA~2\NUGENE~1.0\COMMON~1
    • NuGenesis 9:
      • [NuGenesis Info]
        LongInstallDir=C:\Program Files (x86)\Waters\NGSDMS
        InstallDir=C:\PROGRA~2\Waters\NGSDMS
        LongNgCommFilesDir=C:\Program Files (x86)\Waters\NGSDMS
        NgCommFilesDir=C:\PROGRA~2\Waters\NGSDMS\COMMON~1
  4. Edit the paths to point to the installation directory for NuGenesis software
  5. If any lines are missing, add them to the file, using the correct SDMS installation path for the machine
  6. Save and close the file
  7. If users connect through a Citrix server, copy the following files to all of the user profiles on the Citrix server(s):
    • C:\Windows\win.ini
    • C:\Windows\NG*.ini
  8. If the user profiles are stored on a central server, work with the Citrix administrator to copy the INI files to all of the profiles on the server.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Right click on the Application - click "Run as administrator"

In Windows 7, Server 2008, and later versions, there is a policy called "User Account Control: Virtualize file and registry write failures to per-user locations". This policy, when active, redirects applications to the local application data folder: "%localappdata%\VirtualStore\"

The INI files in the VirtualStore folder may not have the "NuGenesis Info" entries, or they may have incorrect paths in the entries. If this is the case, copy C:\Windows\win.ini to the VirtualStore folder in each user's profile.
