Error "Unexpected error from external database driver (1)" when opening the NuGenesis Connectors mapping tool in LMS - WKB17686

SYMPTOMS

• The following error message appears when opening the NuGenesis Connectors mapping tool in the NuGenesis LMS client, or when verifying the credentials for the Connectors Linker service:

"The file containing the error message cannot be loaded. Unexpected error from external database driver (1) . . ."

ENVIRONMENT

• NuGenesis 8 LMS
• NuGenesis Connectors
• Windows Server 2008
• Windows Server 2012

CAUSE

Two patches for Microsoft Windows, KB4041678 and KB4041681, broke the Jet database driver that the Mapping Tool uses to read Excel files.

FIX or WORKAROUND

1. Download the older, unpatched version of msexcl40.dll to the client.
2. Copy the unpatched file—version 4.0.9756.0—to an arbitrary folder on the client machine, such as C:\JetDB.
3. Edit the following registry key to use the path of the unpatched msexcl40.dll file:

   • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Jet\4.0\Engines\Excel　

     Name: Win32　

     Type: REG_SZ　

     Data: C:\JetDB\msexcl40.dll

4. Close and reopen the LMS client.
