"Fatal error during installation" message when trying to launch MassLynx after Windows 10 security updates are installed - WKB263803

SYMPTOMS

• Windows Security Updates installed by IT
• When launching MassLynx from the desktop icon, the following messages appear:
  • Please wait while Windows configures MassLynx
  • Problem with the shortcut Fatal error during installation (see example below):
• MassLynx will launch if you right-click on the mlynx4.exe file in the C:\MassLynx directory

ENVIRONMENT

• MassLynx 4.1 SCN 1019
• MassLynx 4.2 SCN 989
• Windows 10 

CAUSE

Windows updates broke the link between the desktop shortcut and the mlynx4.exe executable file.

FIX or WORKAROUND

1. Delete the MassLynx desktop shortcut icon.
2. Open Windows File Explorer.
3. Browse to C:\MassLynx and locate the mlynx4.exe file. 
4. Right-click on the mlynx4.exe file and select Send to > Desktop shortcut.
