How to copy and paste files using Robocopy - WKB12537

Article number: 12537

OBJECTIVE or GOAL

Copy files from one location to another using a more robust method than the simple copy (Control+C) and paste (Control+V) or drag and drop.

ENVIRONMENT

  • Windows 7
  • Robocopy
  • RichCopy
  • Symphony

PROCEDURE

  1. Robocopy is a command line feature included in all versions of Windows since Windows Vista. It offers a more robust method of copying files. (Robo = robust, not robotic). It also offers you the option of applying a range of optional commands during the copying process. For a full description of Robocopy, see https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee851678.aspx. A full description of the commands for applying the various Robocopy options can be found at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc733145(v=ws.11).aspx
  2. Obviously, doing things from the command prompt isn't ideal for most users, so Microsoft has also created RichCopy, a free GUI-based tool to access the power of Robocopy. This can be downloaded from https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/2009.04.utilityspotlight.aspx. Instructions for using RichCopy are included in the software download.
  3. Finally, the Waters Symphony software can make use of Robocopy functionality to automatically transfer data from the acquisition PC to another computer and apply postprocessing analysis on that computer, directly from the MassLynx sample list on the acquisition PC.
