What does the "Solvent Required" toolbar in the Empower Run Samples window do? - WKB66605

Article number: 66605

ENVIRONMENT

  • Empower 3
  • Run Samples interface

ANSWER

It calculates a rough estimate of the amount of solvent required to complete a run.

It is not 100% accurate and does not include needle or seal wash volumes. There are some limitations and defects.

Note: The analyst should only use this as a guide and they must verify the volumes required independently.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

It is important to ensure that the system has sufficient solvent to run all the samples in the sample queue.

The software attempts to calculates and displays the amount of solvent required to run the following three groups of samples:

  • Currently running sample set
  • Total samples (all samples queued to run on a system across all the queued sample sets)
  • New samples

The software reads through the sample set table line by line, determines the solvent required for each line, and then sums up all the values to yield the total amount of solvent required. You can define as many as four solvents in the instrument method. As you edit a sample set, the software updates the solvent required information, recalculating the value each time a line is added or deleted. Process-only entries require no solvent and Equilibrate entries use the initial solvent conditions for the entire run duration.

Tip: The Control Panel also displays the time remaining for the currently running sample set, for the total samples, and for new samples (if you are creating a new sample set).

Calculating solvent requirements

The software can calculate the solvent requirements for systems with one of the following instruments:

  • ACQUITY
  • Alliance systems
  • PCM (Pump Control Module) and PCM II
  • 1500 Series (1515, 1525) pumps
  • Agilent A1100 pumps*

If your system does not include one of the specified instruments, the solvent required information is blank.

Guidelines and limitations:

  • The logic tries to consider different scenarios and has some predictive logic but it does not take every factor into account.
  • If your system includes more than one of the specified instruments, the amount of solvent required is calculated only for the first instrument.
  • The amount of solvent remaining is always displayed in liters.

To determine the amount of solvent required to complete a run:

  1. From the Run Samples window, click Control Panel in the QuickStart navigation pane.
  2. From the list, click Sample Set, Total Samples, or New Samples.

Result: The software displays the solvent required for the selection.

*In Empower FR4 with ICF 3.1, the toolbar does not populate. This behavior is documented in CRI-1791.

When using the next injection delay the total solvent may not update correctly if the run time is less then the run time programmed in the instrument method. CRI-4315
