How do I process an Empower sample set that contains multiple blanks for signal-to-noise calculations? - WKB27663

Article number: 27663

OBJECTIVE or GOAL

Have Empower average all blanks before calculating signal-to-noise for any samples.

ENVIRONMENT

  • Empower 3

PROCEDURE

  1. Ensure that the option "use noise centered on peak region in blank injection" is selected in the processing method to be used to process the sample set.
  2. Ensure that the column "Blank" is selected for the samples in the sample set that are the blanks.
  3. Set the "Processing" column to "Don't process or report" for all injections EXCEPT the blanks.
  4. Ensure that the "Processing" column is set to "Normal" for the blanks.
  5. Label any unknown injections. A typical label is "unk".
  6. Add a new line to the sample set and set the function to "calibrate" if there are standards in the sample set. If there are no standards, skip to step 7.
  7. Add a new line to the sample set and set the function to "quantitate" if there are unknowns in the sample set.
  8. Set the "Label Reference" field to match the label used for the unknowns. That would be "unk" in this example.
  9. Save the sample set.
  10. Process the sample set.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This will tell Empower to first process only the blanks. That will give it an average noise value to be used in the signal-to-noise calculations. Processing will then repeat for any standards and unknowns, and the averaged noise value will be used. Due to the label on the unknowns, the quantitate function will not process the blanks a second time.
