What services are installed and required with Empower? - WKB191808

Article number: 191808

ENVIRONMENT

  • Empower
  • Oracle

ANSWER

The services listed in the system administration guide are installed with Oracle when Empower is deployed.

OraclejobschedularWATn and OracleVssWriterWATn are typically not used during normal operations.

The default startup settings are normally as follows:

OraclejobschedularWATn = Disabled
OracleVssWriterWATn = Automatic and running (Note 1: Change this to disabled and stopped)

The services required for normal operation are:

WatersService                                  = Automatic and running (except Citrix servers)
Waters Database Manager Listener  = Automatic and running (cannot connect to WDM without this)
OracleServiceWATn                          = Automatic and running (required service for the database instance)
OracleEmpowerTNSListenerWATn   = Automatic and running (cannot connect to the database without this)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • If you encounter communication problems involving database and raw data shares, you may need to stop and start Waters services on the server.
  • The server contains the Waters services listed above.
  • WatersDHCPService is used when connecting Ethernet-based instruments. It is only required on computers connected to instruments (e.g. LACE or acquisition clients)
  • Note 1: If the OracleVssWriterWATn is running and any external program tries to create a snapshot or restore point then OracleVssWriter will attempt to put Oracle database files in backup mode. This is a breach of the Waters Embedded license. It can cause backups to fail and the database to go down.
