SYMPTOMS

• Only a user with local administrator access is able to control the mass spectrometer (multiple models)

ENVIRONMENT

• Multiple Waters mass spectrometer models
• MassLynx
• Empower

CAUSE

Only the administrator user has full read/write access to the program folders on the PC, while non-administrator users do not. These folders contain the drivers and user interface files necessary for control of the instrument.

Examples include the following:

 

Empower:

C:\Empower

C:\Program Files (x86)\Oracle

C:\Program Files (x86)\Waters Instruments

 

MassLynx:

C:\MassLynx

C:\Program Files (x86)\Waters Instruments

 

FIX or WORKAROUND

1. Select the folder(s) listed above; right-click > Properties.
2. Select the Security tab.
3. Select each of the Groups or user names and, in the Permissions for Authentication section, ensure that there is a tick in the Allow column for each type of permission.Permissions include the right to modify, read, and write files within the folder.                                  
4. If a user does not have all of the permissions they require, click the Edit... button to change permissions.
