ANSWER
- Instruments produced before 2025 have IEEE boards and can be controlled using GPIB / HPIB / IEEE-488 connections.
- Alliance e2695 instruments produced in 2025 and later do not have an IEEE board so can only be controlled by ethernet
- Even if you meet the minimum requirements, having other instruments already running over IEEE would be another reason to use it.
- Communication over Ethernet is supported with versions of Empower greater than Empower 2 Feature Release 5.
- MassLynx software cannot use ethernet to control Alliance e2695 instruments so cannot control newer models (with no IEEE board).

In this context, "IEEE" actually means IEEE-488, also known as GPIB or HPIB.
