Can we use the Ethernet or USB ports in a balance directly for Serial Device Support (SDS) connections without Tibbo boxes? - WKB62266

Article number: 62266

ENVIRONMENT

  • NuGenesis 9
  • NuGenesis 8
  • Serial Device Support (SDS)

ANSWER

SDS can communicate with lab instruments via a direct Ethernet port as long as the machine supports a plain, unencrypted telnet connection over TCP/IP.  For MettlerToledo instruments, the device must have it's Ethernet port configured and the MT-SICS service enabled for the Network interface.

In the SDS Configuration tool, when configuring a device for a direct Ethernet connect, enter the port number as displayed on the instrument's main display screen. Use the Escape Sequence Send and Receive strings as appropriate for the model of instrument; for Mettler devices, this string is usually <CR><LF> (carriage return linefeed).

SDS cannot use USB ports directly to communicate with lab instruments.  Some manufacturers sell USB-to-RS232 adapter cables for use with their devices.  These cables could be connected to the device and to a Tibbo box's RS232 port.
