How to set the Temp folder path for NuGenesis LMS clients - WKB31751

Article number: 31751

OBJECTIVE or GOAL

Set the Temp path as used by the NuGenesis LMS client software for temporary file storage.

ENVIRONMENT

  • NuGenesis 9 LMS
  • NuGenesis 8 LMS
  • NuGenesis 8 ELN

PROCEDURE

  1. The temp path used by LMS is set per-user, per-machine.
  2. Log in to the LMS client as the user on their typical client machine (laptop, Citrix session, VDI,...).
  3. Click LMS Main Menu > Administration.
  4. Click the User Configuration button on the Administration page.
  5. Select the category "User preferences".
  6. The current temp path appears on screen.
  7. Click the Browse button to browse to the new temp path.
  8. Click Apply and OK to save this change.
  9. The new temp path is written to the file weln_user_settings.xml in the user's profile folder, typically Drive:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Waters\NuGenesis LMS\8.0.3.0.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

For the best performance of the LMS client, the temp path must be local to the eln.exe process. The LMS client was designed to use the temporary path for its cache of document contents. If the temp path is set to a network location / UNC path, the performance of the client while working in documents will be slower than when working with a local cache.

The procedure requires that users have the privilege to modify their preferences in LMS. If the user's permission groups do not allow them to modify their preferences, an administrator must modify those groups so that User Configuration = Read - Write.

If the client machine will be shared between multiple users, take care to set a distinct temp path for each user account, so that the cache folders are not shared among users. For example:

  • User1: D:\ELNCache\User1
  • User2: D:\ELNCache\User2

The procedure can be used if the default temp path (%appdata%\Waters\NuGenesis LMS\versionNo) is not suitable due to disk space limitations.
