Error when closing a NuGenesis LMS form: The section is marked as a form but Smart Builder has not validated it - WKB26939

Article number: 26939

SYMPTOMS

  • The following error message appears when closing a NuGenesis LMS form:
    • "This section is marked as a form but Smart Builder has not validated it. Please check if the section is a valid form and the Smart Builder is installed and functions correctly"
  • Excel itself does not close, and it appears to be unresponsive
  • The message box from NuGenesis may appear hidden behind the Excel window

ENVIRONMENT

  • NuGenesis 9 LMS
  • NuGenesis 8 LMS
  • NuGenesis 8 ELN

CAUSE

The Smart Builder plugin is not active in Excel.

FIX or WORKAROUND

  1. Open Excel and click the main menu > Excel Options.
  2. Click the Add-Ins category.
  3. Under "Manager", select COM Add-Ins, and then click Go.
  4. The check box for "NuGenesis Smart Builder" will be clear.
  5. Click in the check box for the Smart Builder add-in and click OK.
  6. Excel will load Smart Builder.
  7. If it is successful, Smart Builder will appear in the Add-Ins tab in the Ribbon.

If Smart Builder does not load after the above procedure, or if it is loaded but returns to an unloaded state after an Excel restart, ensure that the following registry keys exist on the machine:

  • NuGenesis 9.1-9.3 / Excel 365:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Office\Excel\AddIns\FormDesigner
      • LoadBehavior: 3
      • FriendlyName: NuGenesis LMS Smart Builder
      • CommandLineSafe: 1
      • Description: NuGenesis LMS Smart Builder -- an addin created with VSTO technology
      • Manifest: file:///Drive:\Program Files (x86)\Waters\NuGenesis LMS Smart Builder\FormDesigner.vsto|vstolocal
    • NOTE: the same key may also exist in the HKCU path given below for NuGenesis 8 ELN, even for NuGenesis LMS.  If the FormDesigner registry key exists in both HKLM and in HKCU, then the HKCU key will take precedence.  The LoadBehavior key must be set to 3 whether it is in HKLM, HKCU, or both paths
    • NOTE 2: In some cases the LoadBehavior key must be set in a third registry path as given below.  Set the value of the LoadBehavior key to 3:
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun\REGISTRY\MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins\FormDesigner
  • NuGenesis 8 LMS FR1, SR2, and NuGenesis 9:
    • HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\AddIns\FormDesigner
  • NuGenesis 8 ELN:
    • HKCU\Software\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Office\Excel\AddIns\FormDesigner
      • LoadBehavior: 3
      • FriendlyName: NuGenesis LMS Smart Builder
      • CommandLineSafe: 1
      • Description: NuGenesis LMS Smart Builder -- an addin created with VSTO technology
      • Manifest: file:///Drive:\Program Files (x86)\Waters\NuGenesis Laboratory Execution Method Editor\FormDesigner.vsto|vstolocal

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Smart Builder may have been disabled by Excel if it was active during an Excel crash. To re-enable the add-in:

  1. Open Excel and click the main menu > Excel Options.
  2. Click the Add-Ins category.
  3. Under "Manager", select Disabled Items, and then click Go.
  4. Select the Smart Builder add-in and click Enable.
  5. Repeat the steps in the Resolution section so that Excel loads the add-in.

In some cases Smart Builder may be properly registered in HKLM, and not in the disabled Items list, but not loaded by Excel.
