What is the best practice for managing IIS service log files on NuGenesis servers? - WKB14593

Article number: 14593

ENVIRONMENT

  • NuGenesis 8 SDMS
  • NuGenesis 8 LMS
  • Microsoft IIS installed on Windows Server 2008 or 2012

ANSWER

The best practice for managing the IIS service (HTTP and FTP) log files is to disable the logging function on the FTP and HTTP sites on NuGenesis servers. The IIS service logs are not used by NuGenesis software and are useful only in the case of errors in NuGenesis SDMS WebVision, Managed Storage, LMS, or SampleShare. These log files can accumulate slowly, or quickly in case of errors, and easily fill a hard disk. Depending on the configurations of the HTTP/FTP sites and on where the IIS service logs are written, a full disk can cause service outages and "service unavailable" messages in the NuGenesis applications or even a server crash.

In the event of an error, you can turn the IIS service logs back on. The logs are useful for troubleshooting HTTP and FTP errors in the NuGenesis applications; however, you should disable the log files again as soon as possible.

Delete all IIS service logs that are not needed for troubleshooting.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The IIS log files are typically found in C:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles. Log files for the Default Web Site (the default site for NuGenesis WebVision and LMS) are in the W3SVC1 folder. Log files for FTP sites are in the "FTPSVCx" folders.
