Error "Excel is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action" occurs for all NuGenesis LMS users on Citrix - WKB120811

SYMPTOMS
- The user logs in to NuGenesis LMS and gets an error every time when they close an Excel section that had been launched in “Edit Externally”
ENVIRONMENT
- NuGenesis 9 LMS
- NuGenesis 8 LMS
- NuGenesis 8 ELN
- Citrix XenApp
CAUSE
User logged in to NuGenesis via the Citrix shared application. The Citrix session remained open indefinitely. Citrix Session timeout was set to never for the user's Citrix profile. This caused all Microsoft OLE connections to remain open and never close. Thirty was the approximate number of sessions remaining open to cause the error
FIX or WORKAROUND
Set the Citrix sessions timeout to 30 minutes or less.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Note the Citrix disconnect time starts when the user screen inactive or logs out of the Citrix session.
Instructions setting Citrix Sessions Time out complete the following steps to complete the task:
- Install Citrix Group Policy Engine on the machine intended for policy management
- Open Microsoft Group Policy Management console, create a new GPO or edit existing one
- Select user mode policies
- Note: The Citrix group policy engine adds a Citrix node in the Group Policy Management Console and Group Policy Object Editor
- Create new Citrix Policy or edit Unfiltered policy
- Note: Unfiltered policy is always present and applies to all users. By default, there are no settings defined
- Navigate to Settings and select Session Limits. Configure the following settings:
- Disconnected Session Timer: Enables or disables a timer to determine how long a disconnected, locked workstation can remain locked before the session is logged off. By default, this timer is disabled, and disconnected sessions are not logged off. Recommendation: enable this setting
- Disconnected Session Timer Interval: Determines how long, in minutes, a disconnected, locked workstation can remain locked before the session is logged off. By default, the time period is 1440 minutes (24 hours). Recommendation: 30 minutes
- Session Idle Timer: Enables or disables a timer to determine how long an uninterrupted user device connection to a workstation will be maintained if there is no input from the user. By default, this timer is enabled. Recommendation: enable this setting
- Session Idle Timer Interval: Determines, in minutes, how long an uninterrupted user device connection to a workstation will be maintained if there is no input from the user. By default, idle connections are maintained for 1440 minutes (24 hours). Recommendation: 30 minutes
- Save the settings and exit Microsoft Group Policy Management Editor
- Apply configured GPO to your VDI-in-a-Box environment.
