"GPIB error:- Function required GPIB board to be CIC" after upgrading to a C30 PC or adding GPIB inlet - WKB853

Article number: 853

SYMPTOMS

  • Sample list run stops mid-run with red light in the inlet editor; pump keeps flowing but MassLynx queue pauses
  • OR system stops with same error when adding a new sample queue
  • Clicking red light on the Inlet Editor Status tab shows error message "GPIB error:- Function required GPIB board to be CIC"
  • System fails only with ALL of the items specified in the Environment list

ENVIRONMENT

  • MassLynx
  • C30 1136 PC
  • Mass spectrometer
  • At least one GPIB-controlled inlet (for example, 2695, 2525, PCM, 515)
  • PDA (for example, 2996 or 2998)

CAUSE

There is a timing issue with the C30 1196 computer that causes the error message to show when ALL the items listed in the Environment section are present.

FIX or WORKAROUND

  1. Replace the computer. P-series computers do not show the issue; it is specific to the C30 1136 PC.
  2. For a simple system (for example, Alliance plus PDA), replace the PCI GPIB card with a USB-GPIB-HS converter cable (SAP part 668000495).
Use National Instruments Driver Version NI 488.2 version 2.8.1 (in Waters PC image in the drivers folder).
Do not use the NI 488.2 v14.2 supplied with the cable.
  3. Temporary workarounds for Autopurification systems and complex systems with many GPIB modules:
    • Revert to an older PC (for example, C20 or M58) because these do not show the issue. Note that these are not supported on current software.
    • Enable National Instruments NI I/O trace logging. This can delay the occurrence of the error by up to 36 hours, but it is not a permanent fix.
