How do you create a comma-delimited text file that can be imported into MassLynx as a sample list? - WKB63781

Article number: 63781

OBJECTIVE or GOAL

Create a comma-delimited text file (*.csv) that can be imported into MassLynx as a sample list.

ENVIRONMENT

  • MassLynx 4.1
  • MassLynx 4.2

PROCEDURE

  1. In the MassLynx sample list, add the column required (Samples > Format > Customize...).
  2. Open a blank Excel spreadsheet.
  3. Right-click the first column in the sample list and select Properties from the menu.
  4. Note the FIELD ID in the Properties panel. The Field ID is the variable name within the software for the column.
  5. Enter the FIELD ID into Row #1 of the first column in the spreadsheet. Note, the FIELD ID is case and syntax sensitive. It must be entered in Excel exactly as it appears in the Properties panel.
  6. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for each column on the sample list, entering the FIELD IDs into Row #1 across the columns of the spreadsheet. Note: the columns in the spread sheet and those in the samples list do not need to be listed in the same order. The software will know which column goes to which field based on the FIELD ID.
  7. After entering all of the sample list columns into the spreadsheet, add one additional column. Enter the word Index into Row #1 of this column.
  8. In Excel, go to File > Save As. Change the File of Type setting to CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv). Save the initial file as a template.
  9. Populate the columns of the spreadsheet with the appropriate information as needed for MassLynx. When adding methods to the spreadsheet, enter the file name—no need to enter the extensions or file paths. The Index column is populated starting with 1, incrementing each row by 1 until the end of the samples is reached.
  10. Go to File > Save As and give the populated version of the file an appropriate name, again saving as File of Type CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

To import the file created in this procedure into the MassLynx sample list, go to File > Import Worksheet. Set the File of Type to Comma Delimited (*.CSV, *.TXT). It is important to set the File of Type correctly because this tells MassLynx what type if file is being imported. Do not use All Files (*.*) as the File of Type; this would give an import error.

Attached here are two example text files for reference.
