ANSWER

The RMS (Root Mean Square) calculation and RMS residual are related concepts, but they are used in different contexts and have different meanings.

RMS (Root Mean Square) – General Calculation

A statistical measure of the magnitude of a set of numbers (for example, LCMS retention time or peak area). This test is used where difference in values can be positive or negative but you are interested in magnitude, not direction.

where x and i are the values in the dataset.

RMS Residual (Root Mean Square Residual)

A specific application of RMS to the residuals (errors) in a model (for example, PPM mass difference as applied to a calibration using the .ref files as a "model" dataset). The residual refers to the difference between the observed data and the model predictions. A smaller RMS residual value indicates a better fit to the model.
