You may encounter another error when installing KB2999226: "Installer encountered an error 0x80070422. The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it".
1. Go to Control Panel > Windows Update and open it.
2. Click on "Change settings" and select "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" from the drop-down list. Click OK.
3. Try running KB2999226 installation package. Should work this time.
4. Restore Windows Update settings to previous values (no updates).
