Error on Empower network: ORA-12514 Database Connection Failed - WKB22987

SYMPTOMS

• When logging into Empower, the following error message appears: "Database Connection Failed ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor"
   
• From the Empower database server, in the Windows Event System, warning messages include "Resource-Exhaustion-Detector", and oravssw.exe is consuming a lot of virtual memory

ENVIRONMENT

• Empower 3 FR3 Enterprise

CAUSE

Memory leak on oravssw.exe process

FIX or WORKAROUND

1. If not using the Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) feature (i.e., no backup utility is using this feature), simply disable the ORAVSSW.EXE service (Oracle WAT11 VSS Writer Service).
   
   
    
2. If VSS is being used, stop and restart the ORAVSSW.EXE service after performing your disk shadow backup.
