What are some common causes of peak fronting? - WKB255705

Article number: 255705

ENVIRONMENT

  • Columns
  • Liquid chromatography

ANSWER

Common causes include:

  • Mass overload (too much mass in each injection)
  • Column void due to packing material dissolution or bed collapse
  • Volume overload (too much sample volume injected)
  • Poor connection somewhere in the flow path between the injector and the detector:
    • If using PEEK fittings, the tubing can slip if the PEEK finger-tight fitting does not grip the tubing strongly enough.
    • If using stainless steel fittings, ferrule depth may be too short and a new connection may need to be made.
