The application method conditions will affect the lifetime of a column, but adding a guard column and changing the cartridges out regularly can extend the life of the column in the presence of high-pH mobile phase.

Historically, high-pH applications run on 100% silica columns would employ a sacrificial silica column after the mobile phase pump, to saturate the high-pH mobile phase with silica to protect the main column. This would slow the dissolution of the main silica column.
