The voltage read across neutral and ground at the outlet should not exceed 2Vac.
Properly installed electrical systems shouldn't typically ever see much higher than 2Vac between neutral and ground while under load. Having a voltage over 2Vac (especially a rising voltage) is suggestive of a problem with your electrical wiring, faulty ground, or a load imbalance at the AC Mains panel. A local electrician should look at the wiring.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Having a voltage across neutral and earth in excess of 2Vac can damage the circuit boards in the instruments.
