What is the reason not to top off mobile phases such as THF? - WKB238495

Article number: 238495

ENVIRONMENT

  • Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC)
  • Alliance
  • Mobile phases
  • Maintenance
  • Advanced Polymer Chromatography (APC)

ANSWER

Tetrahydrofuran (THF) is a common Cat B Peroxide Former (PF). THF generates peroxides that are sensitive and energetic if detonated. These peroxides may accumulate to concentrations high enough to have noticeably higher viscosity or to form a separate liquid phase.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Many compounds solubilize in THF, allowing contaminants to concentrate over time if recycled.
