High-pitched, loud, unusual noise from dry (scroll) rough vacuum pump - WKB5276

SYMPTOMS

  • Loud, high-pitched noise coming from scroll rough vacuum pump 
  • Grinding noise coming from scroll rough vacuum pump

ENVIRONMENT

  • QTof Premier
  • Synapt MS/HDMS
  • Synapt G2 MS/HDMS
  • Synapt G2-Si MS/HDMS
  • Xevo TQD
  • Xevo TQD IVD
  • Xevo TQ-s micro

CAUSE

Graphite seal tips are worn or damaged; pump was not rebuilt properly; rotor is out of alignment

FIX or WORKAROUND

  1. Replace seal tips.
  2. Start pumping sequence.
  3. If noise persists, replace the pump.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Depending on the manufacturer, replacement pump may need to be set to appropriate working voltage. Consult the user manual supplied with the pump.

See attachment at the bottom of what a grinding "motor bearing" pump sounds like.  Take note you can split the pump apart and turn it on with the manual switch as seen in the video and leave the cooing fan connector plugged in. 

PLEASE be very careful to keep your fingers away when you do this.  If the pump sounds this bad in a grinding sense it must be replaced.  See attached video at the bottom.
