APC CM-30 shows "multi-mode column selection is out of range" error after communication issue - WKB94404

SYMPTOMS

• APC CM-30 displays "multi mode column selection is out of range" error 
• Confirmed there are no invalid combinations of valve positions in the instrument method, per WKB9155
• During communications issue, system was rebuilt in Empower and power-cycled

ENVIRONMENT

• ACQUITY APC
• Empower
• APC Single Zone Column Manager (CM-S)
• APC 30cm Single Zone Column Manager (CM-30S)

CAUSE

The most likely cause is that the instrument was not rebooted in the proper order, and the system configuration was not built correctly. 

FIX or WORKAROUND

1. Delete the system in Empower and the system component entries in DHCP Server Configuration.

2. Power-down the system and reboot the Empower PC.

3. Power-up the system. Power-cycle the column manager devices in the correct order according to the ACQUITY Advanced Polymer Chromatography System Guide.

• Power-cycle the secondary manager (CM-30S or Dual CM-S) first.
• Power-cycle the primary manager (CM-S with valves) second.

4. Confirm that DHCP populates with appropriate IP addresses.

5. Reconfigure the system. The CM-S (with valves) installed as the primary module is the first serial number added to the system configuration. Secondary modules (CM-30S or Dual CM-S) are added to the Empower system configuration second.

6. Confirm in the console that the CM-S is configured as the primary.

• From the console system tree, select System.
• From the Configure menu, select Primary Column manager. All column managers will be listed. The primary column manager has a check mark next to it.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The order of reboot and system configuration for the CM-S and CM-30 are very important.
