ACQUITY UPLC H-Class Quaternary Solvent Manager seems to flow incorrectly and make different noises when run manually versus loading a method - WKB79342

Article number: 79342

SYMPTOMS

  • QSM makes different noises when flow is manually programmed through ACQUITY Console, as opposed to when loading a method with identical flow parameters
  • QSM primary pump stroke frequency is notably different when setting flow rate in Console vs method
  • clipboard_e63366c7269cf49dc67d58360cd19fe32.png
  • System pressure and flow rate remain the same through pump stroke frequency change

ENVIRONMENT

  • ACQUITY UPLC H-Class Quaternary Solvent Manager
  • ACQUITY UPLC

CAUSE

This is expected behavior. The QSM stroke volume has a firmware-controlled variable setting based on flow rate. The commands sent from ICS to the instrument are different when initiated from a CDS method versus the ACQUITY Console.

FIX or WORKAROUND

Load a method with the appropriate flow rate, and the appropriate stroke volume will be used from that point on.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Because this behavior is driven by firmware, it will be observed across any CDS, including Empower/MassLynx/UNIFI as well as third-party CDS.

QSM stroke volume info, from WKB2875:  25 µL/stroke up to 500 µL/min, then it increases linearly to 50 µL/stroke at 1mL/min, maintaining at 50 µL/stroke up to 2 mL/min.
