How to replace a 750 mm x 50 μm QDa probe assembly in an ACQUITY UPLC ISM splitter - WKB48296

Article number: 48296

OBJECTIVE or GOAL

Replace a 750 mm x 50 μm QDa probe assembly in an ACQUITY UPLC ISM splitter.

ENVIRONMENT

  • ACQUITY QDa Mass Detector
  • ACQUITY UPLC ISM
  • ACQUITY UPC2

PROCEDURE

Part number 700009977

Tools required

• T10 Torx driver

• 1/4-inch open-end wrench

• Flat-blade screwdriver

• Tape measure or ruler

Preliminary

1. Stop system flow.

2. Disconnect the probe from the QDa Detector.

3. Disconnect the tubing from the two splitter ports. (The left-side port connects to the bottom of the ISM tee; the right-side port connects to the Convergence Manager).

Remove the defective probe assembly

1. Use a T10 Torx driver to remove the two screws that hold the splitter module to the ISM.

2. Slide the splitter out of the ISM, and then place it on a flat work area.

3. Use a T10 Torx driver to remove the two screws that hold the splitter module cover in place, and then remove the cover. Set the parts aside.

4. Using the 1/4-inch wrench, disconnect the probe fitting from the back of the splitter tee.

5. Remove the white, PTFE set screw that secures the probe tubing to the splitter module. Save the set screw.

6. Remove the defective probe and discard it.

Install the new probe assembly

1. Set the probe tubing position in the splitter module:

a. Place a tape measure or ruler outward from the face of the splitter module, as shown in Figure 1.

b. Carefully insert the new probe assembly into the splitter module and very lightly secure it in place with the white PTFE set screw so that the end of the ferrule is located at the 9.25 inch (23.5 cm) position.

c. If necessary, loosen the set screw and readjust the length.

d. Tighten the set screw until you can no longer move the tubing when pulling on it lightly.

2. Remove the PEEK ferrule that is attached to the other end of the probe, and then replace it with the gold compression screw and ferrule from the kit.

3. Insert the probe tubing into the splitter module, and then carefully make 2.5 wraps of the tubing as shown below.

4. Push the ferrule into the splitter tee and, while maintaining inward pressure on the tubing, finger-tighten the fitting until tight. Then, using the wrench, tighten an additional 3/4-turn.

5. Reinstall the splitter module cover and secure it with the two T10 Torx screws.

6. Carefully reinsert the splitter module into the ISM, and then secure it with the two Torx screws.

7. Reconnect the tubing from bottom of the ISM tee to the left-side port of the splitter.

8. Reconnect the tubing from the Convergence Manager to the right-side port of the splitter.

9. Connect the new probe to the QDa.
