ANSWER

The cooling head module on the UPC2 (700009044) uses Peltier cooling technology to get the pump heads down to the required temperature for operation. The Peltier chips work to maintain the pump heads at 3 and 11 °C on the Primary and Accumulator pumps, respectively. This is important to maintain the pressurized CO2 in the liquid phase. These chips do wear out over time. The more work the chip has to do, the quicker it will wear out.

There are various steps that can be taken to make sure the maximum life of the chip is obtained.

  1. Keeping the lab temperature below 21 °C or 70 °F is the most important step.
    • The pump heads are cooling when the system is on, regardless of flow or acquisition.
    • An elevated lab temperature means the chips are working harder to maintain the required temperatures.
  2. Maintaining a good supply of liquid CO2; if using a bottle, liquid withdrawal is necessary.
    • If the phase of CO2 is not entirely liquid, when the pump head compresses, it compresses the gas phase as well.
    • Compressing a gas induces a temperature rise, which requires extra work to maintain the cool temperature.
  3. Ensure that airflow around the UPC2 is free of obstructions.
    • Dusty environments can clog not only the vents but aldo the internal heat sinks.
    • Ensure that there is at least 15 cm (6 inches) clearance at the rear.
    • Ensure that there is at least 8 cm (3 inches) clearance on the right-hand side of the BSM. 

These steps will help ensure that the pump cooling head module lasts the expected life cycle.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

With consistent usage in compliance with the site prep guide, replacement of the cooling head module would be expected after approximately four years. Remember that even without flow and acquisition the pump heads are cooling.
