Visually:

The column heater/cooler has its own power cable and an on/off switch on the side.

The column heater does not have a power cable (it gets its power from the Alliance unit) and has no on/off switch.

From the serial number:

Serial numbers are formatted in this manner: AxxBBBxxxA (where A and B are letters and Xs are numbers).

For a column heater BBB = SMH

For a column heater/cooler BBB = SMC
