Error "Unable to get Profile information for the selected VPR" when editing Empower archive templates in NuGenesis SDMS - WKB77524

SYMPTOMS

• The following error message appears when editing a template line in NuGenesis SDMS Archive Template Builder for the backup of Empower projects:
  • Unable to get Profile information for the VPR selected

ENVIRONMENT

• NuGenesis 8 SDMS
• DCOM-based Empower data adapter, DA R1 or prior releases
• Empower 2 or 3

CAUSE

The SDMS archive template builder could not connect to the remote half of the data adapter. This half is installed on the machine identified as "Remote DCOM Server" in the template. This error most often occurs when the firewall on the remote machine is active and blocking DCOM traffic or when the DCOM permissions on the remote machine do not allow SDMS to activate the adapter.

FIX or WORKAROUND

1. If the Windows Firewall is active, enable traffic port TCP port 135 through the firewall. The easiest option is to enable the "COM+ Network Access (DCOM-In)" rule in Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.
2. If the firewall is inactive or active but allowing traffic on port 135, check the event viewer for error messages from DistributedCOM. The most common fix is to grant the logged-in user on the SDMS machine permissions for Remote Activation of the Empower adapter:
   1. Open Control Panel > Administrative Tools, and open Component Services.
   2. Expand Component Services > Computers > My Computer > DCOM Config.
   3. Select the Empower-3 Data Adapter or Empower-2 Data Adapter, as appropriate.
   4. Right-click the adapter and click Properties.
   5. Click the Security tab.
   6. Click Customize under Launch and Activation Permissions and click the Edit button.
   7. Add the logged-in Windows account on the SDMS machine to the list, and grant it at least Remote Activation.
   8. Click OK to the dialog boxes.
