No, the background job does not delete unread messages.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This limitation can create problems if unread messages accumulate in the database. The messages may slow down the system's performance if they are not deleted. Enhancement request CRI-412 was filed to have the background job delete old and unread messages.
To delete the unread messages in bulk, open the LMS Inbox in the client, Shift-click messages, and either delete them directly or mark them as Unread. In the latter case, the next execution of the background job will delete the old messages.
