Error "[NG14570] Unknown database error" when copying records to a Managed Storage project in NuGenesis WebVision - WKB15525

Article number: 15525

SYMPTOMS

  • The following error message appears in WebVision when copying records to a Managed Storage project:
    • "[NG14570] Unknown database error.  Please report this to your support or to NuGenesis Technologies support."
    • The same message may be seen in .NGD or .mark_bad files in the TE_TEMP folder after printing reports to UNIFY or archiving files with the NuGenesis Archive Agent
  • The destination project is an SDMS Managed Storage project
  • The SDMS project uses a Managed Storage Location that uses an FTP site and a port number other than 21

ENVIRONMENT

  • NuGenesis 9 SDMS
  • NuGenesis 8 SDMS

CAUSE

The FTP server is behind a firewall that restricts traffic to the port numbers used in passive FTP connections.

FIX or WORKAROUND

Identify the relevant FTP host:

  1. Log in to SDMS Administrator.
  2. Expand Projects > Master List > Server. Select the project name.
  3. Press Ctrl-Enter to open the project's properties.
  4. Select the Managed Storage Locations tab in the Project Properties window.
  5. Take note of the FTP Host and Port displayed in the table.

Log in to the FTP Host server and reconfigure the FTP site:

  1. On the FTP host server, go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools and open Internet Information Server (IIS) Manager.
  2. Expand the local server > Sites.
  3. Look through the list of sites for the one that is bound to the same Port number as seen in SDMS Administrator.
  4. Double-click the relevant FTP site in the list.
  5. Double-click on "FTP Firewall Support".
  6. Clear the "External IP Address of Firewall" text box.
  7. Click the Apply button in the task pane on the right-hand side.
  8. If this server hosts more than one Managed Storage FTP site, repeat steps 3 through 6 for each site.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

SDMS uses either active-mode or passive-mode FTP connections for Managed Storage, depending on the port number in the Managed Storage Location. If the port number is 21, SDMS uses active-mode FTP; if the port number is not 21, SDMS uses passive-mode FTP. In most cases, the different FTP modes produce no visible difference in the NuGenesis applications, but the use of either mode may cause problems if the FTP traffic is routed through a firewall.
