Empower WDM backup does not check for redundant projects in the raw data backup location. The raw data backup location can exceed the provisioned capacity. - WKB68332

Article number: 68332

SYMPTOMS

  • The Waters Database Manager (WDM) backup process does not inspect for redundant project folders in the raw data backup location.
  • Projects that were deleted through Empower configuration manager are still present in the backup location.
  • The RMAN activities of the WDM backup create backup sets that are a 1:1 backup of the Oracle tables only.
  • The backup location increases in size and it may exceed the provisioned capacity.

ENVIRONMENT

  • Empower 3 SR3 and above
  • WDM only
  • Customer utilizing legacy scripts or their own backup protocol are unaffected

CAUSE

Previously the legacy scripts deleted the backup location and created/re-created the backup folder structure each time the script was run.

This function was omitted from the backup operation in WDM. The WDM backup function interrogates the database to determine a list of live projects. It then creates a robo-copy job for each project. Consequently, it only creates or updates those projects detailed in the live system.

It does not inspect for the presence or redundant projects in the raw data backup that are not in the live system.

FIX or WORKAROUND

  1. Run the legacy scripts regularly to force the creation of a 1:1 raw data backup. Legacy scripts are not supported in 3.6.x or higher.
  2. Customers are advised to suitably backup the raw data backup location.
  3. Copying to another network location after the backup job completes allows you to delete the backup while maintaining the current backup.
  4. If you move the raw data backup from the backup location, a 1:1 copy of the live system raw data is created when the WDM backup runs.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

IMPORTANT - The integrity of the raw data backup is not impacted and no data is lost from the backup. However, archived raw data persists in the raw data backup location.

CRI-609 was created and is posted - a suitably trained Administrator can manually remove the Raw Data from the backup location for projects removed from Empower.

Customers utilizing their own backup solution must also back up the "externaltables" folder on the backup drive.
