OBJECTIVE or GOAL

Recycle solvents using the ACQUITY UPLC Refractive Index Detector and Empower.

ENVIRONMENT

• ACQUITY UPLC Refractive Index Detector 
• Empower 3

PROCEDURE

From the ACQUITY Console, click RI detector > Control.

To enable solvent recycling:

• In the Set recycle valve dialog box, click Recycle > OK.

To stop solvent recycling:

• In the Set recycle valve dialog box, click Waste > OK.

To recycle solvent within an instrument method:

• From the RI detector instrument method editor, in the Divert Valve area of the General tab, select Recycle.

• Save the method.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

During operation, the waste port of the recycle valve is open and the recycle port is closed, so fluid flows to the waste container. When you request solvent recycling, solvent flows through the open recycle port and returns to the solvent reservoir. Recycling continues until you change the recycle valve position to waste.

Recommendation: To avoid wasting solvent when equilibrating the detector, set the recycle valve to the recycle position.

Recycle the mobile phase solvent only in these cases:

• During equilibration
• When the detector is not performing an analysis

Tip: When you click the "Setup" button in the data application, the recycle valve immediately moves to the position defined by the method. It does not wait for the injection to occur.
