Will Oasis HLB retain Triton-X and/or SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate)? - WKB234928

Article number: 234928

ENVIRONMENT

  • Oasis
  • Vacuum cartridge
  • 96-well plate
  • µElution plate
  • Hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB)
  • Co-polymer
  • Polymeric sorbent
  • Solid-phase extraction (SPE)

ANSWER

Yes

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Triton-X will retain on Oasis HLB because it is a non-ionic surfatant.  SDS should retain on Oasis HLB as well, since it has a hydrophobic tail. . Oasis HLB also retains a wide variety of fairly polar analytes.

Since SDS is an anionic surfactant with a pKa close to 3.3.  A better choice for SPE of SDS might be Oasis MAX.  Oasis MAX is a mixed-mode reversed-phase strong anion exchanger (always positively charged). On Oasis MAX, capture the acidic group by loading and washing in high pH (to make sure the acidic group is charged).  Then elute in low pH (~1.3) where the acidic group should be neutralized.

Also see the related application note, which discusses cleanup (removal) of Triton-X in the presence of basic drugs in plasma. In this example, Triton-X is only retained by reverse-phase. The basic drugs are retained by reverse-phase and cation exchange. The Triton-X is washed out in 100% methanol steps, leaving the basic drugs on the cartridge to then be eluted in a high-pH methanol solution.
